YOU MIGHT BE THINKING…
"I'm not tall enough / young enough / experienced enough."
The guide has an entire chapter on exactly this. Most of what people believe about modeling requirements is 15–20 years out of date.
"I don't know how to pose."
Neither did most working models when they started. Posing is a skill. The guide covers it step by step.
"I don't know if agencies will even look at me."
You'll know exactly what to send, how to write it, and which agencies accept direct submissions β€” with a real list included.
The people who make it in this industry aren't waiting until they feel ready
They start, they learn, they adapt. This guide is where that starts.
REAL STORIES FROM WORKING MODELS
Tina Diedhiou @tina_diehiou
Tina started her career in 2020 with a small agency and shot her first European editorial with Jeanne D’Art, later published in KALTBLUT Magazine. A few years later, she transitioned into high fashion runway and luxury campaigns.
Born in Casamance, Senegal, Tina built her career from zero and, within just a few years, entered the world of international high fashion. Since then, she has walked for some of the biggest luxury fashion houses and designers in Europe, including Balmain, Dior, Prada and many others.
Today, alongside modeling, Tina is also developing her own creative and social initiatives. She interviews people from the fashion industry, supports projects connected to women and local communities, and created her own platform called ULOK, focused on development projects in Casamance by women for women.
Her story is a strong example of how modeling today can become much more than only fashion shows or photoshoots. It can become a platform, a voice and a way to create opportunities for other people too.

β€œWhen I first arrived in Europe, I was just starting my modeling career in 2020 and trying to grow step by step. My first shoot here was with Jeanne, and I still remember telling her during the interview that my dream was to walk for Chanel one day. Years later, that dream became reality.
This industry is not easy. I worked constantly, did editorials, kept improving my portfolio, and stayed persistent even during difficult periods. I’m very grateful for the support, the creative shoots, and the motivation to keep growing.”

Paloma Elsesser @palomija
Paloma Elsesser began her career at a time when the fashion industry still had very limited space for models who did not fit traditional runway standards. Early on, she was often told she was neither the "right" size for high fashion nor the "right" size for the plus-size market.
Discovered through social media by legendary makeup artist Pat McGrath, Paloma quickly caught the attention of some of the industry's most influential photographers, stylists, and creative directors. Rather than changing herself to fit existing expectations, she built her career around her individuality, confidence, and strong personal identity.
Over the following years, Paloma became one of the most recognizable faces in modern fashion. She has worked with some of the world's leading luxury brands, including Fendi, Alexander McQueen, Balenciaga, Ferragamo, Coach, ChloΓ©, and many others. Her editorials and cover stories have appeared in Vogue, Harper's Bazaar, i-D, W Magazine, and numerous international publications.
In 2023, Paloma was named Model of the Year at The Fashion Awards, one of the most prestigious recognitions in the industry. Her success marked an important moment in fashion, proving that representation, individuality, and authenticity have become powerful forces in shaping the future of modeling.
Today, Paloma is known not only for her work on runways and in campaigns, but also for helping redefine what beauty looks like in modern fashion. Her story demonstrates that a successful modeling career is no longer built solely on fitting traditional standards. It is built on confidence, consistency, and the courage to bring something unique to the industry.

"Beauty means expression and being your most authentic self."

Mona Tougaard @mona_tougaard
Mona Tougaard is one of the strongest examples of a new generation fashion model who built an international career at a very young age through runway work, major campaigns, and consistent presence in the luxury fashion industry.
Born in Aarhus, Denmark, Mona was discovered when she was only 12 years old. At first, modeling was not something she seriously planned as a career. However, at the age of 15, she won the Elite Model Look Denmark competition, one of the most recognized model scouting platforms in the world. The competition became the starting point of her professional journey and introduced her to international agencies and fashion brands.
Her breakthrough came in 2019 when she debuted as a Prada exclusive, one of the most prestigious opportunities for a new model. During the same season, she walked for major fashion houses including Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Valentino, Miu Miu, Dior, Fendi, Loewe, Stella McCartney, and many others. Fashion media quickly named her one of the most important breakout stars of the season.
What makes Mona's story especially inspiring is that her career was not built through social media fame or celebrity connections. Her success came through traditional modeling routes: scouting, competitions, castings, runway shows, and years of continuous work within the industry.
Today, Mona Tougaard is considered one of the most influential young models in fashion and regularly appears on the world's biggest runways. Her career shows how a single opportunity, combined with consistency, professionalism, and a strong personal presence, can develop into an international success story.

"I'm happy I was scouted at a young age."

Alex Consani @alexconsani
Alex Consani is one of the most recognizable models of the new generation and one of the most influential transgender models working in fashion today.
Born in California, Alex began modeling at the age of 12 after signing with a Los Angeles agency representing transgender models. Growing up surrounded by a supportive community helped shape her confidence and inspired her to pursue a career in an industry where transgender representation was still extremely limited.
Over the years, Alex built a successful career in both fashion and digital media. She worked with major brands including Chanel, Burberry, Mugler, Stella McCartney, and Alexander McQueen, becoming one of the most visible faces of her generation.
In 2024, Alex made fashion history as the first openly transgender woman to win the prestigious Model of the Year award at The Fashion Awards. She also became one of the first transgender models to walk in the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show.
Today, Alex is recognized not only for her work on international runways and campaigns, but also for helping create greater visibility and representation within the fashion industry. Her success has inspired a new generation of young people to see possibilities that were rarely visible in fashion magazines just a decade ago.

"That was never my goal. It was always just to be that person that I never got to see when I was looking through a magazine."

Jacky O'Shaughnessy @jackyoshaughnessy
Jacky O'Shaughnessy is one of the most unusual success stories in modern fashion and proof that a modeling career can begin much later in life.
Unlike most professional models, Jacky did not build her career in her teens or twenties. She spent most of her life outside the fashion industry and was working in New York when she was unexpectedly discovered in her 60s.
After being noticed by representatives from American Apparel, Jacky became the face of several major campaigns and quickly gained international attention. Her confidence, natural appearance, and strong presence challenged traditional ideas about age in fashion and advertising.
What made her story stand out was not only her age, but the fact that she entered the industry without a previous modeling career. At a time when fashion was heavily focused on youth, Jacky proved that visibility, confidence, and individuality do not disappear with age.

Today, she is often referenced as one of the most recognizable examples of late success in the modeling world and continues to inspire people who believe it is too late to start something new.

"I never expected any of this to happen."

The Photographer Behind This Guide
Jeanne D’Art is a Barcelona-based fashion photographer and producer working between editorials, campaigns, model development, and creative direction.
Her work has been published in international magazines including Vogue, L'Officiel, Cosmopolitan, GLAMOUR, Grazia, KALTBLUT Magazine, HUF, FLANELLE, and others.
Over the years, she has worked with models at very different stages of their careers, from first portfolio tests to international publications and runway development. Through these shoots, she saw how much confusion, fake information, unrealistic expectations, and bad advice exist in the modeling industry, especially for beginners.
This guide was created to explain the industry in a realistic and practical way: how portfolios actually work, what agencies look for, how models grow professionally, and why persistence matters just as much as appearance.
It combines real industry experience, fashion editorials, model development, and modern digital tools used in today’s modeling and content creation world.
